The History of Chocolate

Chocolate comes from cacao beans, which come from the Cacao Tree, a tropical tree native to South America but now widely cultivated all over the world. Chocolate is created by a complex process of cleaning, blending, and roasting the beans, which are then ground up and mixed with sugar, cocoa butter, and milk solids. Chocolate was discovered in the 16th century by Spanish explorers in Mexico and sent it back to Spain, where it spread across Europe and was finally perfected in Switzerland in the late 19th century. Today the United States is the leading producer of chocolate.
